The CEREC system combines digital imaging with computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). A digital scan captures your prepared tooth in 3D, software designs a crown to fit it, and an in-office milling unit carves the crown from a ceramic block while you wait.

The CEREC crown process brings what used to take several appointments into one visit that typically lasts about 90 minutes to two hours. Here is what to expect:
First, we numb the area and prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate the crown.
Instead of messy impression material, we capture a detailed digital scan of your prepared tooth. The CEREC camera takes the 3D images in seconds, which many patients find more comfortable than traditional impressions.
Using specialized software, Dr. Knapton designs your custom crown chairside, adjusting the fit and bite alignment before milling.
Once the design is ready, the milling unit carves your crown from a solid ceramic block, which typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.
Dr. Knapton checks the fit and appearance of your crown, makes any needed adjustments, and bonds it permanently to your tooth. The crown can be polished and glazed to match your natural teeth.
